On January 12th, 2023, Yuga Labs announced an expansion to its NFT ecosystem that starts with a free mint and a skill-based game. The free mint Sewer Passes NFTs were made exclusive to Bored Ape Yacht Club and Mutant Ape Yacht Club holders. These Sewer Passes will unlock a skill-based game called Dookey Dash. The Sewer Passes yielded over 4,000 ETH (over $6 million) in total sales volume within a few hours of release. Sewer Pass holders can play the Dookey Dash game from January 19th to February 8th. The scores accumulated from the game form part of a larger narrative termed “Chapter 1.”
What Is The Dookey Dash Game About?
Dookey Dash is an endless runner game similar to Sonic Dash, Subway Surfers, Super Mario Run, and Temple Run. Sewer Pass Holders are the only ones with access to this Yuga Labs’ interactive skill-based game, which they can play here. The game will run from January 19th, 2023, to February 8th, 2023. Players must score above zero to qualify for the next round, called “The Summoning.” The goal is to reach the highest score possible by collecting items and completing quests on the farm. On February 15th, Sewer Passes will be validated, and the player with the highest score will be rewarded with a key to a “mysterious and very important box.”
The Sewer passes have four tiers (based on the BAYC/MAYC and BAKC combination), with preference given to higher tiers as players with higher tiers will be awarded higher scores due to multipliers. It’s more like a hierarchical setting: the higher the tier, the higher the multiplier. There’s an option to buy power-up packs for 2 APE ($9). For a pass to be validated, a user must play at least once and score more than zero. Players who own extra NFTs will be able to secure some extra bonuses. As players make their way through the Sewer, the aim is to survive as long as possible while picking up some items along the way, which can be exchanged for rewards.
The game will save players’ scores on a leaderboard, with players free to exchange sewer passes, but high scores are tied to the combination of their sewer pass and wallet. That means that if you set a score and then trade your Sewer pass to a friend so they can play, that score will disappear. However, the score will remain intact if the sewer pass returns to your wallet. Sewer passes can only have one score tied to them.
It’s worth noting, though, that according to a tweet by the official BAYC account, “On February 15th, validated Sewer Passes will be eligible to transform into a mysterious new power source.” With time, the revealed items will evolve throughout the year and be used in future games.
What is Jimmy the Monkey?
One thing that makes Yuga Labs stand out is its continuous expansion in the NFT space; almost every time, there’s always an expansion of some sort. “Jimmy the Monkey” is one of Yuga Labs’ most recent innovations. The interactive experience has been in the works for a while now and was first announced in September before its eventual release in December 2022. It is a six-stage expansion that started with a short film about an ape named Jimmy who “takes a shit so atomic, he ripped a damn hole in the space-time continuum.” Another ape named Curtis was given a mysterious locked box. Somehow, the key to that box ended up in Jimmy’s stomach while drunk. All efforts to retrieve the key proved abortive, not even throwing it up. After several trials, Jimmy passed out on the toilet seat. At the last minute, Curtis and some other apes then devised a plan – dig into the sewers and retrieve the key from under Jimmy’s butt! That’s where the video ends, and the game finds players on a quest to retrieve the key.
The short film is a sequel to the Dookey Dash game, which was released on January 19th. This whole experience is masterminded by one company – Yuga Labs!
What Is Yuga Labs?
Founded in 2021 by Wylie Aronow and Greg Solano and based in Miami, Florida, Yuga Labs is a company that specializes in blockchain technology. It develops NFTs and digital collectibles and carries out some projects in the fields of cryptocurrency and digital media. The company’s name, Yuga, comes from a villain in a game that can turn its adversaries into 2D art. The use of apes in the Bored Ape Yacht Club was inspired by the history of people referring to themselves as apes in cryptocurrency.
Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) and Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) NFTs are the company’s biggest projects and are part of the most successful NFT projects on Ethereum. For a company founded in 2021, Yuga Labs has taken the technology space by storm. As of the time of writing, the company is worth around $4 billion after a $450 million funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz’s crypto fund. It is also worth noting that in 2022, Yuga Labs acquired 423 CryptoPunks and 1,711 Meebits. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, but CryptoPunks’ average selling price is about $177,420, per DappRadar. Meanwhile, Meebits sell for an average of $16,100, so the deal is likely worth more than $100 million, just considering the price of the valuable NFTs Yuga received. Asides from the ones listed above, Bored Ape Kennel Club and Otherside also form part of the “Yugaverse.”
Last but not the least, Apecoin! Apecoin is the native governance token of Yuga Labs. It is an active tool in the expansion of BAYC into web3 and gaming, as seen in Dookey Dash. As of the time of writing, Apecoin’s price is around $5.50.
Yuga Labs is undoubtedly a frontier in the NFT industry and keeps developing new ideas and several use cases for NFT technology, as seen with the launch of the Dookey Dash game. There’s more to come from Yuga Labs, and we can’t wait to have it!
